What is automatic PDF splitting?
Automatic splitting cuts a PDF that holds several documents into as many files as there are documents. Koncile reads every page, spots the logical breaks (a new invoice, an exhibit, a contract, a packing slip) and puts each document in its own file, ready to be extracted, routed or archived.
How does Koncile split a PDF into separate documents?
Splitting happens on upload, with no manual step. Each page is read and assigned to a document, then each document goes through the processing set for its type.
- Step 1
Upload
The PDF arrives by upload, email or API.
- Step 2
Page reading
Every page is read, with OCR for scans and photos.
- Step 3
Breaks
The AI finds where each new document starts.
- Step 4
Splitting
A separate file is created for each document.
- Step 5
Extraction
Each file goes through the template for its type.
What are the two splitting modes?
Koncile offers two settings, depending on whether your PDF bundles identical documents or different kinds of files. Both are turned on in the extraction template settings.
Same document type
Several invoices in one PDF: turn on splitting in the invoice template, Koncile cuts the file and extracts each invoice on its own.
Different document types
Invoice, purchase order, contract and exhibit mixed together: list the expected types, the AI classifies each page and routes it to the right template.
When should you split a multi document PDF?
Whenever a batch scan, an export or an email bundles several files into one. These are the most common cases among teams using Koncile.
Invoices and purchasing
Several invoices in one PDF, an invoice with its purchase order, or merged expense receipts.
Contracts and legal
A contract and its exhibits, contracts scanned in a batch, compliance documents grouped in one submission.
HR and onboarding
A full onboarding packet with ID, offer letter and direct deposit form, or several months of pay stubs in one file.
Real estate and leasing
A lease with its move in checklist and addenda, or a rental application with ID, proof of address and income.
Insurance claims
A claim form sent with the adjuster report, photos and repair estimate, all in a single PDF.
Freight and logistics
Successive bills of lading, several delivery receipts or package scans combined in one file.
Do you need an extraction template to split a PDF?
Yes. Koncile works with document templates: a template is the list of fields to extract for a given type, such as Invoice, Purchase order, W-9 or ID. Splitting relies on these templates to know which documents to expect and how to process them once separated.
If your PDF contains a document no template covers, it is flagged in the classification alerts and an operator can assign it by hand.
How do you connect PDF splitting to your tools?
Through the Koncile API: your tool sends the PDF, Koncile splits it and returns one result per document, with its extracted data. The separated files stay available for review and download in the app. You can also upload PDFs by hand or forward them with email import.
An AI OCR built for security
Your documents are never used to train a model. Fully encrypted software, secure storage of extracted data, a SOC 2 certified and GDPR compliant platform.
PDF splitting FAQ
What is Koncile?
Koncile is document extraction and automation software. It turns invoices, quotes, purchase orders, contracts, IDs or prescriptions into usable data, in Excel, in JSON or straight into your tools by API.
I have ten invoices in one PDF. Can Koncile split them?
Yes. Koncile splits the file in seconds and extracts the data from each invoice. You get ten separate documents in your workspace, each with its own fields.
Which documents can be split automatically?
Any business document: invoices, quotes, packing slips, reports, contracts, IDs, HR or banking documents.
Can Koncile split documents of different kinds?
Yes. You list the types expected in the file (invoice, purchase order, contract…), the AI analyzes each page and matches it to the right extraction template.
How does Koncile detect where a document ends?
Koncile analyzes every page to decide which document it belongs to: a new issuer, number, layout or type. The file is then split automatically.
Does splitting work on scanned files?
Yes. Scanned or photographed pages go through OCR first, then through the same analysis as native PDFs.
